cRAy cRAy video challenge – week 1

Welcome to the first week of our fan video challenge!  So many song suggestions!  But I can only make one video a week.  🙂

This week’s fan video music recommendation comes from jazzbaby1. The song is “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys.  If you are a music aficionado, I urge  you to check out her blog here:  http://funkybluedandelion.blogspot.com

Thanks very much to everyone for all your input.  As for the name of the challenge, I had many lovely ideas submitted:  “Fall”ing with RA, Armitage Autumn, September to Remember, Sizzling September, Memorable Mondays, and Charmitage Weekly.  However, after a Tumblr blog writeup on Richard Armitage and his crazy fans, I had to incorporate the hilarious term “cRAy-cRAy” into my challenge title.  Not only do I embrace that label, I live it!

As for my fanvideo, again I had a lot of fun and did some experimentation.  I was playing with the Roto Brush in Adobe After Effects CS5.  This tool allows a user to cut out a moving character from his background.

Did you guess which character would appear?  Many of you were correct.  Congratulations!  This week’s challenge video features the absolutely beautiful Lucas North.

Here’s a screencap of Lucas from Spooks 7.8 looking very intense.

Richard Armitage as Lucas North

I could stare at him all day.  One of the difficulties in making Richard Armitage character fanvideos is the danger of stopping and drooling rather than actually editing and such.  😀

EDIT: The video was blocked on YouTube so please use the Vimeo link. I did an “audio swap” on the YouTube version and linked to the Vimeo video in the description.

Here’s the link to the video on YouTube:

Just in case it gets blocked, here’s the backup on Vimeo. It’s a different thumbnail, but the exact same video:

Hope you enjoy this little video. Here’s a link to download it if you want to watch it offline: http://www.mediafire.com/?3z2y4h4435vlh5l

Yikes, now I need to choose a song for the next fanvideo!

VERY cool video! Congrats!! I’m no fan of beastie boys but I loved this!

  2. Your vidieo was great! I love the doubled images of Lucas. One of my favorite things to say is I love Lucas, because of I love Lucy. LOL!

  3. jazzbaby1 says:

Wow, totally not was I was expecting but much much cooler! Great job as always, bccmee!

  4. Fabo/Musa says:

Genius! Fabulous as always! I love all the action, surprises, and those blue eyes 🙂

    ….and…I also love Lucas 🙂

(OK – I did guess Thornton, but I’m happy it is El Norte!)

  5. Kitty says:

Great vid! I’ve said it before but it bears repeating, you are a genious! Considering how Lucas’ character was ‘sabotaged’, you should send this to the “Spoooks” writers. Lucas will always be a hero. I don’t know who that nightmare was in S9.

  6. NovemberBride says:

    What I like:

    The red Sabotoge title exploding…
Roto Brush rules!!!! And yet another techie tool introduction.
    Lucas watching Lucas hit w/tazer.
    @:43 the sound effects w/the motion…cool!
    @1:23 Lucas X 3???!!!! Where’s my blood pressure medicine?
    @1:32 Lucas backing out of….Lucas?!
And of course the Lucy connection….morning laugh: CHECK!!

Must admit, this is the first time I’ve listened to the weird Beastie Boys but I did like the effects they used and the beat. Yeah, I know. It’s an old lady thing. I can’t imagine that Mr. Mozart would classify this as music, but it’s interesting!!! =o)

Thanks B for another fantastic vid!!! I’m loving this cRAy cRAy thing!!!!

    • bccmee says:

Another incredible analysis, NovemberBride! Since you’re a self-proclaimed “old lady” then I’m sure you got the “I Love Lucas” reference, LOL! I’m delighted you were able to sit through the whole video even if the music is not to your taste. Thanks for all your continued support!

  7. jules says:

Suddenly I love Mondays….I wish we could have sabotaged the script writers office and re written series 9…love you, love Lucas and definitely loved Lucy…thanks Bccmee

  8. judiang says:

Ohhh, that was marvelous! I really like the Lucas and Lucas action, it’s a very cool effect. Another fantastic video, m’dear.

  9. Zelda says:

I loved it! Such fascinating effects and Lucas is lovely as always.

  10. ayyp says:

    Cool video, bcc mee!

  11. Kitty says:

*genius (not being able to spell is a sign of genius)

  12. love4ot says:

I loved the word “Sabotage” at the appropriate locations in the vid! Very cool.
And I loved the “I Love Lucy” bit! It turned out great!

  13. CDoart says:

Thank you, bccmee!!! What a wonderful video and I liked Lucas as a hero. I love Lucas, too ;o)
The effects are great, the moving Lucas, the watching Lucas during the electro shock scene, … Wonderful and very dramamtic!

    • bccmee says:

Good job noticing that little detail, CDoart. I made the taser scene go faster but I slowed it down at the point of contact, LOL! I’m sure the blue lightning was added in post-production. 🙂

  14. Maria Grazia says:

Excellent! Super gorgeous! I love it. I just needed some more Lucas. Because, you know, I also love him and miss him so much. TY!

    • bccmee says:

I sure wish RA could have done a guest role during his hiatus, even if it would be a flashback, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. He is so beautiful! ♥ Thanks for your comment, Maria Grazia!

  15. Brilliant as usual B! I love your use of that Roto Brush tool (did you do the whole video in After Effects?). Does that mean we could surround ourselves with the wonderful Lucas anytime, anyplace anywhere, as the slogan goes???? Just thinking of some incredibly boring work presentations that would improve no end with a bit of ‘inserted’ Lucas!

    • bccmee says:

ROTFL, Christianne! How amazing that would be to have Lucas running across our PowerPoint presentations to liven things up a bit! Thanks for your comment and for giving me a chuckle!

As for editing this, I used Premiere Pro to cut the video and After Effects for the rotoscoping. 🙂 The only video I edited entirely in After Effects is my GoGle vidlet.

      • Glad I could brighten up someone’s day. Personally, I’m looking forward to the invention of a pocket device that does Lucas North holograms, but that’s just wishful thinking 🙂

Thanks for the technical info Bcc. I’m only just returning to working with Photoshop and Illustrator at the moment, as I’ve been away from graphic design for quite a bit, and it’s amazing how much you forget if you don’t use these programmes often enough. Shocking! Planning on having a play with some moving images once I’ve got to grips with these though but wouldn’t know where to start. I currently work with Adobe Creative Suite CS4 Design Standard but that doesn’t include any video editing software so may have to start saving up…

  16. Wow!! I love Lucas too!
The music is making me anxious, but the video is breathtaking.
Richard is the most sexy spy of the decade!

  17. Ana Cris says:

I so wanted to sabotage the Monday and all others.
Thanks for Lucas North to bring inspiration!

    • bccmee says:

Thank you for your comment and all your support, Ana!

      • Ana Cris says:

        Oh Bcc,
I’m sorry. Garfield and I hate Monday. And, today, I was so stressed at work, wanting to go straight to the Brazil Independence Day holiday (7.9) that I forgot to tell you so your video is amazing! I love Lucas North and always think that strong, fast and tense songs combine with him anymore. Today was better Mondays! :0)

  18. Teuchter says:

Like some others the music is not my favourite, but I know I will watch and listen many times over!! It is just “Fabo” ! as Sir Peter J says!! One of the things I have always loved about your videos is the unexpected little bits at the end and I would almost hold my breath to see what you would come up with! Once again you didn’t disappoint!! 🙂 I got such a kick out of it and it goes without saying I LOVE Lucas and always have. He’s one of my favourite RA characters and I miss him dreadfully. Thank you for bringing him back to life!! 😀

    • bccmee says:

Aw thanks, Teuchter! I’m glad you could watch the video even though the music was not to your liking. It’s hard not to love Lucas.

I didn’t know Sir Peter J says “Fabo!” I’ll have to find that reference, LOL!

      • Teuchter says:

You can find Sir Peter saying, “. . . . That’s fabo! Fabo fabo fabo! Thank you very very much!” near the beginning of the second Hobbit video that he posted on Facebook! I often go back and watch all three videos as he fascinates me. What a hugely talented guy. No wonder Richard is so thrilled to be working in these movies with him!

  19. Heather says:

Love Lucas, love the video, love the song. Brilliant as always!!! Can not wait to see what you have in store for us next Monday.

    • bccmee says:

Wow you’re one of the few who actually like the song, Heather, LOL! I hope I can think of something for my next video. I have a few ideas but they have a habit of changing midstream. 😉 Thanks for your comment!

  20. Ania says:

Great video, music harmonizes perfectly with the image. Thanks Bccmee!
And obviously, I love Lucas, too 😉

  21. Carolyn says:

Another great video from the Master, Bcc! I love Lucas! Lovely Lucas and lovely video. You always pick the best shots of him. Thank you! This will be a great month!

    • bccmee says:

Thanks Carolyn! I’ll let you in on a little secret: sometimes I didn’t go hunting for the most appropriate shot of Lucas, but instead I would be entranced by his beauty and put in a clip of him looking stunning! Don’t tell anybody. 😉

  22. phylly3 says:

Totally loved this! You are introducing me to the Beastie Boys! Of course I had heard of them, but never really paid attention. Well, you certainly got my attention! 🙂 (Left you a comment on Youtube.) I know I will love this month for your videos. I don’t know how you can do them so quickly!

    • bccmee says:

Wow thanks for leaving two comments, phylly3! I’m glad you were able to be introduced to the Beastie Boys. They’re a New York band and I was tempted to call them up if my video was blocked, LOL!

  23. GratianaDS90 says:

Thanks for giving me my Lucas fix, BccMee!
I’m sure it was a labor of love–appropos since today is “Labor Day” in the U.S. Now if we could only get the Spooks 10 writers to slip in that Lucas is alive and well and living on the other side of the world working as a Grip on a little film in New Zealand, life would be perfect! Ha!
    Cheers! Gratiana ;->

    • bccmee says:

Wouldn’t that scenario be grand, GratianaDS90? I’d love to see Lucas give them the slip and go into exile in some exotic locale. Thanks for your comment and lovely thoughts!

  24. mirella says:

Wonderful video,I liked! 🙂 Lucas is lovely as always. 😉 🙂 Great job BccMee!

  25. Yay! September is going to be a wonderful month 😉
I loved your video, B. Pretty cool!
And that “I love Lucas” at the end… Adorable! And I love him too 🙂

  26. bcc — your talent is Crazy great!! I read the other comments and agree that you should get your work in front of the producers! You are a shoe-in for creating previews & coming attractions. I hope the “right” people are tuning into your blog — I see a big, bright future for you!

In awe of your talent —

amen Atticus! Talent on loan from…well, you know….

  28. So agree with Heidi!! Love all your work, you gotta do something with that talent you have. It’s amazing,

  29. Wow, wicked crazy talent! Like everybody else….thinking amazing:) Very cool stuff…will be an interesting month……have fun!

  30. fabi says:

You conveyed very well the tension and explosive moments, like one of the best Spooks episodes. Great choice of scenes, music, effects and the surprise ending – wonderful as always, Bccmee!
My only complaint : it’s too short… Looking forward to the next. 🙂

    • bccmee says:

Thanks, fabi! I have a confession to make: I cut the song in half, LOL! Since I had Lucas on the screen two-by-two, I thought it would be more manageable with a shorter video. 😉

  31. Summer says:

Wohoo! Cool, cool video! Awesome effects!
I’m a cRAy-cRAy girl too and proud of it!! LOL “I Love Lucy”…LOL Knew there’ll be an after credits surprise 😀
I was so wrong with my guessing, thought the first one would be a JP one 🙂
Thx for this cRAy cRAy video challenge! xx

    • bccmee says:

Thank you for your participation, Summer! I am usually working on several videos at a time and often even I don’t know which one will be completed first, LOL! This video just took over and made it to the finish line first. 🙂

  32. Brilliant! Just brilliant! You are a shining star of hope in this long period of waiting until The Hobbit.
    Thank you!!!
    Off to watch it again!

  33. bill austin howe says:

You are just so damn awesome! When I need a smile, you’re the one I will run to!

  34. Thaís says:

Hey Bccmee! How r u? Another great video! Awesome!!! You’re a pro. The song fitted perfectly. I miss Lucas North somehow. RA’s incredibly sexy in this character. Oh my! The reference to “I love Lucy” was soooo cute!! I can hardly wait next Monday. Have a nice week. Mine is already nice because of this video. Cheers!!

  35. beengizzied says:

    bccmee,
just make a sandwich, eat it and get cracking on the next one.

  36. Bccmee, I never tire of your work!! You are so unbelievably awesome and talented I just don’t know what to say. I don’t know what you do for a living but someone should hire you on the spot to do this kind of work. Seriously, I wish I had a production company — you’d be hired in a sec! Can I just say RA is Gorgeous?? Sigh. (and thank you). 🙂

Credits were fun too — I love watching the credits to see what “extras” are in there.

    • bccmee says:

Wow that is super sweet of you to say, Robert’s Sister! Not sure if there are any jobs making fanvids for a certain hot British actor though. I may have to expand my repertoire, LOL!

  37. Jael says:

Awesome video and in under a week!!! You’re talent leaves me speechless (and that’s fine as long as the videos keep coming ;))

  38. I am an observer more than a participant (this stuff is all new to me), but I am wild about your creativity! Fascinating what you do – definitely agree with Heidi re: producer. This is unique, and that’s not easy to say these days.

  39. Heather says:

Wooo hooo! A Guy video! Have you turned to the dark side? LOL I know that you are not a fan of Guy but I enjoy him…I am not a fan of Marion (he could have done better) so I just pretended not to see her. LOL The song was nice, a big change from the Beastie Boys we had last week. Thanks for making these videos for us to enjoy. I know that it’s hard work, but what a delicious subject to work with. 🙂

    • bccmee says:

Haha, I did actually enjoy making this video, Heather. I thought they looked beautiful together but I haven’t actually seen all the shows, so I just look at their bits. 🙂 Glad you liked the song this week! Yes, the Beastie Boys choice was a bit controversial but I liked that song enough to listen to to it repeatedly. And you’re absolutely right about the subject matter being delectable. ♥

      • Heather says:

I actually like the Beastie Boys. I used to sing some of their popular songs to my daughter when she was little. She still laughs when she hears them!
